Change subtitle speed in an SRT file

Retime an SRT or VTT file for a video that plays faster or slower, such as a lecture at 125% speed.

How to change subtitle speed

  1. Add your file

Choose the SRT or VTT file that you made for the video at its normal speed.

  2. Enter the speed

Type the new playback speed of the video in Speed. Use 125 for a video that plays 25% faster, or 80 for a video that plays 20% slower.

  3. Download

Click Change speed, then click Download. Play the video to check the last subtitle.

When to use Change speed

  • You sped up a lecture to 125% and the subtitles must keep up.
  • You slowed a clip to 50% for a tutorial and the subtitles now show too early.
  • You exported a video at a different speed from the one you subtitled.
  • A talk was uploaded at 1.5x speed and the subtitle file is for the original.
  • You retimed a recording in your video editor and the subtitles stayed behind.

Common questions

How do I change the speed of subtitles?

Type the new speed of the video as a percent and click Change speed. The tool retimes every subtitle for you.

Why are my subtitles slower than the video?

If the subtitles fall further behind as the video plays, the video runs faster than the file was timed for. Enter a speed above 100, for example 104.

What speed do I enter for a 1.5x video?

Enter 150. Speed 2x is 200, and half speed is 50.

Does this change how long each subtitle stays on screen?

Only as much as the video speed changes. At 125% every subtitle is a little shorter. To set the display time yourself, use Adjust durations.

Can I slow down subtitles on Netflix with this?

No. The Netflix player controls its own subtitles. This tool retimes subtitle files that you made or downloaded.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The tool runs in your browser. Your subtitle file never leaves your computer.
