How to convert TXT to SRT
Paste or open your text
Paste your text into the Text box, or click Open a TXT file. Write one subtitle on each line. A blank line between groups of lines makes each group one subtitle.
Set the start and the speed
Enter the time of the first subtitle in Start time. Change Reading speed if your viewers read faster or slower than 17 characters each second.
Make the file
Click Make SRT file, then Download. Open the file in a subtitle editor to fit the times to your video.
When to use TXT to SRT
- You have a script or a translation in Word or Notepad and no timing.
- A client sent a TXT file with the subtitle text, and you need an SRT file.
- You want a first draft of the timing before you fine-tune it against the video.
- You wrote captions in a text file for a video editor that only imports SRT.
- You want to bring text into Premiere Pro as captions.

Common questions
Can I convert a TXT file to SRT?
Yes. Paste the text or open the TXT file. The tool gives each subtitle a start time and an end time and writes an SRT file.
How do I change a Notepad file to SRT?
Save your text in Notepad as a TXT file, then open it here. Do not only rename the file. A renamed TXT file has no times, so players cannot use it.
How does the tool set the timing?
Each subtitle stays on screen as long as its letters need at your reading speed. The shortest subtitle is 0.833 seconds and the longest is 7 seconds. Between subtitles there are 80 milliseconds.
How do I fit the timing to my video?
Open the SRT file in a subtitle editor that plays the video, such as the CaptionsHero editor. Then move each subtitle to its place.
How can I convert text to SRT for free?
Use this page. It is free, needs no account, and runs in your browser.
What if my text has no blank lines?
Then every line becomes one subtitle. Add blank lines if you want two lines in one subtitle.
How long can a line be?
The tool does not split or wrap lines. A line of 42 characters or fewer fits well on a screen. Split longer lines before you convert.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The tool runs in your browser. Your subtitle file never leaves your computer.
