When to use Word count and quote

  • You need a price for a subtitle translation job and the client sent an SRT file.
  • A client asks how many words are in their subtitle file.
  • You want to compare a per-word quote with a per-minute quote for the same file.
  • An agency pays by the word and you want to check its invoice against the file.
  • You need the length of a video and you only have its subtitle file.

Common questions

How do I count the words in an SRT file?

Add the file here. The tool counts the words in the subtitle text only. It leaves out the cue numbers, the timecodes, and the tags.

Do subtitles count in a word count?

Yes. The tool counts the words that viewers read. A dash that marks a change of speaker is not a word. A number such as 2024 is one word.

How do I quote a subtitle translation job?

Multiply your rate by the number of words, or by the number of video minutes. Clients and agencies use both. Pick the unit that your client uses.

Where does the video length come from?

It comes from the end of the last subtitle. If the video is longer than that, for example because of a long ending with no speech, add the extra minutes yourself.

Does it work for Chinese, Japanese, and Thai?

These languages do not put spaces between words, so the word count is too low. Use the character count to price them.

Do I have to enter a rate?

No. The counts show as soon as you add the file. The price shows when you enter a rate.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The tool runs in your browser. Your subtitle file never leaves your computer.
