Common questions

How do I sort an SRT file by time?

Add the file here and click Sort by time. The tool orders the subtitles by their start time. Then download the file.

Why are the subtitles in my SRT file out of order?

The usual cause is a copy and paste of a block of subtitles to the wrong place, or a join of two files. The times are right, but the order in the file is not.

Can I sort by end time, duration, or text?

No. Only the start time gives a file that players can use, so the tool has no other sort order.

What happens to two subtitles with the same start time?

They keep the order that they had in the file.

Does sorting change the numbers?

Yes. An SRT file is numbered from 1 in the new order. The times and the text do not change.

Does sorting fix subtitles that overlap?

No. It changes the order only. Use the Fix gaps and overlaps tool for overlapping times.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The tool runs in your browser. Your subtitle file never leaves your computer.
