SRT file statistics

Count the subtitles, words, and characters in an SRT or VTT file, and see its reading speed.

How to get the statistics of an SRT file

  1. Add your file

Click the box and choose an SRT or VTT file, or drop the file on it.

  2. Read the numbers

The grid shows the size of the file, the time it covers, the word and character counts, and the reading speed.

  3. Check the limits

The table Subtitles over each limit counts the cues that break each rule. Use the SRT validator to see which cues they are.

When to use Statistics

  • You need the number of subtitles, words, and characters in a file for a report.
  • A client asks how long the subtitles stay on screen in total.
  • You want to know the highest reading speed in a file before you deliver it.
  • You want to compare how dense two translations of the same video are.
  • A vendor sent you a file and you want a quick view of its quality before you open it.

Common questions

How do I count the subtitles in an SRT file?

Add the file here. The first number in the grid is the number of subtitles in the file.

What does time on screen mean?

It is the total time in which at least one subtitle is visible. When two subtitles overlap, the overlapping time counts once.

How is the average CPS worked out?

The tool finds the characters per second of each subtitle and takes the mean of all of them. A subtitle with a length of zero is left out.

Which limits does the table use?

Up to 17 and 20 characters per second, 42 characters on a line, 2 lines, a length from 0.833 to 7 seconds, no overlaps, and a gap of at least 80 milliseconds between two cues.

Do tags count as characters?

No. HTML tags such as <i> and position codes such as {\an8} are left out. Spaces count. Line breaks do not.

Can I get a price for the file?

Yes. The Word count and quote tool counts the words and multiplies them by your rate per word or per video minute.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The tool runs in your browser. Your subtitle file never leaves your computer.
