SRT to VTT and VTT to SRT converter

Change an SRT file to VTT, or a VTT file to SRT. The tool picks the direction from your file.

How to convert SRT to VTT or VTT to SRT

  1. Add your file

Drop an SRT or VTT file into the box, or click the box to choose one. The tool reads the file type from the file itself.

  2. Check the result

The result line shows how many subtitles changed and the new format. An SRT file becomes VTT, and a VTT file becomes SRT.

  3. Download the new file

Click Download. The new file keeps your file name and gets the new extension.

When to use SRT to VTT and VTT to SRT

  • Your web video player asks for WebVTT, and your subtitle editor exports SRT.
  • A web page or course platform does not accept your SRT file.
  • You downloaded a VTT file from Zoom, Teams, or YouTube and your video editor wants SRT.
  • Your video editor imports SRT but not VTT.
  • You want to remove VTT styles and cue settings so a simple player can read the file.

Common questions

How do I convert a VTT file to SRT?

Drop the VTT file into the tool. It writes an SRT file with the same text and times. Click Download to save it.

Are VTT and SRT the same?

No. Both hold timed text. A VTT file starts with a WEBVTT line and writes times with a dot. It can also hold styles and positions. An SRT file numbers each subtitle, writes times with a comma, and has no header.

Is VTT better than SRT?

Neither is better for every job. HTML5 video players use VTT. Video editors and many upload forms use SRT. Choose the format that your player or form asks for.

What is lost when VTT becomes SRT?

The WEBVTT header, notes, style blocks, regions, and cue settings such as position and alignment. Italic, bold, and underline tags stay. Voice tags like <v Anna> are removed, and the spoken text stays.

What program opens a VTT file?

Any text editor opens a VTT file, for example Notepad or TextEdit. Most video players, such as VLC, show it with a video.

Can I convert VTT to SRT with FFmpeg?

Yes. The command ffmpeg -i input.vtt output.srt does it. This page does the same job with no command line.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The tool runs in your browser. Your subtitle file never leaves your computer.
