How to compare two subtitle files
Add both files
Drop the older version in the Before box and the newer version in the After box. The comparison starts when both files are in.
Read the summary
The summary counts the changed, added, and removed subtitles. Subtitles that are the same in both files are counted but not listed.
Go through the changes
Each row shows a cue number. Changed words have a colored background. A timing change shows the old and the new start and end.
When to use Compare subtitles
- A client sent back a corrected subtitle file and you want to see what they changed.
- A reviewer edited your file and you want to check each edit before you accept it.
- You exported the same subtitles from two programs and want to know if they differ.
- You retimed a file and want to confirm that only the times changed.
- A vendor returned a translation and you want to find the lines that differ from your draft.

Common questions
How do I compare two subtitle files?
Add the old file as Before and the new file as After. The tool lists every subtitle with different text, different times, or no match in the other file.
How does the tool decide which subtitles belong together?
It pairs subtitles that are on screen at the same time. A new subtitle at the start of the file does not shift the pairs of all the others.
Can I compare an SRT file with a VTT file?
Yes. You can use any mix of the two formats. VTT styles and cue settings are not compared.
Can I compare two languages?
You can, but every line shows as changed, because the words are different. Use the tool for two versions of the same language.
What does it mean when only spaces or line breaks changed?
The words are the same but the line breaks or the spaces are not. This happens when someone rewraps the lines of a subtitle.
Can I save the comparison?
No. The comparison only shows on this page. Use your browser's print function to keep a copy.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The tool runs in your browser. Your subtitle file never leaves your computer.
